Oh, the trusty drugstore: it’s both a time-saver and a money-sucker for a busy actor. CVS, Walgreens or Duane Reade have everything you could ever want, at prices that are sometimes more than an actor’s salary can afford. While you can definitely save money on your sundries by using Amazon Subscribe and Save, many people overlook one of the greatest thrifty actor resources of all: the dollar store. With the recent downturn in the economy, many dollar stores are starting to stock a larger diversity of household goods at super low prices. New York City residents are especially lucky, since we’ve got Jack’s 99-Cent Store. With two locations (both exceptionally close to major audition hotspots), Jack’s has nearly everything a thrifty actor could need. In the past, I’ve purchased paper towels, spray cleaner, toothpaste, a cheese grater, iced tea, ramen noodles, canned goods, notebooks, envelopes, greeting cards and even a really fancy wheel of brie at prices that never reach $2. If you are brand conscious, a dollar store might not be your cup of tea, but, if you like saving money, it’s still one of the most incredible places you’ll find. Swing by your local dollar store today!
